A Tayu was not just a singer, but a complete entertainment package: dancer, poet, fashion icon and maybe even a bit of a magician. In Edo, they were the influencers of their time, only instead of selfies, they had artistic paintings made of themselves. And although their world has long since passed, they are still the greatest mysteries in Japanese history - a bit like the Mona Lisa, whose smile still puzzles us to this day.
